Scrimmage notebook: Youth infusion
There was little doubt who Saturday's breakout player was. Not only did Tommy Saunders produce the longest play of fall camp on a 56-yard touchdown catch, but he led all receivers with five catches and 87 yards.
"Last year was kind of disappointing a little bit because we saw him do this on the scout team all the time and then last year, you just didn't see it," said head coach Gary Pinkel.
"What has happened is he knows the offense well, he's relaxing, he's not thinking and we're seeing some things he can do."
Saunders is well-known for his work ethic, staying after practice every day to catch extra balls.
"Every receiver has something, J-Ray explosion out of his break, Will Franklin, great athlete, everybody has something," Saunders said.
"I'm not as gifted as some of them with speed and quickness, so I got to catch the ball. My main goal is to catch every ball they throw to me."
