October 12, 2009 Brenham (TX) Blinn College moved up a spot to No. 2 in the rankings after an impressive 63-29 win over Trinity Valley College. The Buccaneers started the season at No.1 in the rankings and moved ahead of City College of San Francisco, who was idle for the week.No. 2 Blinn darted out to a quick lead behind the arm of Cameron Newton, who was 9-of-11 for 177 yards and four touchdowns in the first quarter. Newton finished with 370 yards and six touchdowns on the day, as the Buccaneers rolled up 576 total yards of offense for the afternoon. Blinn will take on NEO and Cisco in the coming weeks before a Halloween showdown at Navarro. The No. 4 Bulldogs hammered Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on Saturday, 59-14, to move up one spot in the rankings. Navarro will face Cisco and Arkansas Baptist before the big game against Blinn. The National Division Southern Conference in Southern California went through more shakeup this past weekend when Palomar College traveled to Saddleback and defeated the Gauchos, 27-21. The Comets' Anthony Young intercepted Gaucho quarterbacks three times, the last coming in the waning moments with Saddleback going in for the winning score. Palomar's lone loss of the season was a 29-26 setback to No. 8 Grossmont College the week before, and moved back to No. 15 with the win. Saddleback fell to No. 19 with the loss and will hope to resurrect its national title hopes as they travel to Long Beach City College this coming weekend. Palomar will host Santa Ana College this weekend, with the Dons (3-3) coming off back-to-back heartbreak losses to Saddleback and No. 36 Orange Coast College. The big game this weekend in Northern California will pit No. 3 City College of San Francisco versus No. 5 Butte College, in a game that should give the winner a lead in the race for the NorCal Conference title. Both teams enter the game at 5-0 in a conference with five teams rated in the top-37 in the nation, but a win on Saturday would likely vault them higher in the rankings. Another team from the NorCal, San Mateo College, is rated No. 13 and making waves. The Bulldogs (5-0) have upcoming games against No. 25 Santa Rosa, No. 37 Foothill, San Francisco and Butte in the next four weeks and if victorious could find themselves in a national title run. San Mateo has won five straight games by an average of 35 points-per-game against lesser opponents and now will get a chance to prove themselves on a grander stage. No. 6 Fort Scott College holds all the cards in the Jayhawk Conference and had another dominating defensive performance with a 21-0 win over Dodge City over the weekend. The Greyhounds will get their chance at Jayhawk supremacy on Halloween day when they host perennial power No. 9 Butler College. Mississippi Gulf Coast moved up to No. 7 in the weekly rankings with a lopsided 49-19 win over East Central College on Thursday night. The Bulldogs have shrugged off an opening day loss and reeled off six straight impressive wins, grabbing control of the Mississippi ranks. Gulf Coast will close out the regular season against Hinds (3-4) and No. 28 Jones County (5-2), looking to capture the top divisional seed in the state playoffs.
