Message served
The opening week of football is in the books for most of the country, as the folks out west were in full force this past weekend. The Mississippi ranks kickoff for the first time this Thursday.
San Francisco served a big message this past weekend when they hammered Santa Rosa, 58-14, to remain at No. 2 in the rankings. The Rams had a 44-0 lead in the fourth quarter in cruising across the finish line. San Francisco will host Sacramento City this weekend.
Hutchinson moved up to No. 3 in the rankings after a 72-3 massacre of Ellsworth. The Blue Dragons had a 525-52 advantage in total yardage, rolling up 441 yards rushing.
Hutch will now have one of the more intriguing games of the weekend when they travel to No. 11 Iowa Central. The folks at Iowa Central are 2-0 after stunning Garden City, 30-20, on Saturday. The game was tied heading into the fourth quarter, with Garden City racking up 186 yards worth of penalties.
Ventura remained at No. 5 in the rankings after rallying past Saddleback, 35-30. The Pirates took advantage of 18 penalties from the Bobcats and blocked a punt for a touchdown. They now have a heavyweight bout with No. 19 Mt. San Antonio in their home-opener.
Defending national champion San Mateo looked as if it would cruise to a win when it jumped out to a 20-0 lead at the half on Sierra. The Bulldogs then received a scare from the Wolverines when Sierra ripped off 27 points in the fourth quarter to take a lead. San Mateo would score late to win, but remained at No. 9 in the rankings as a result of a near meltdown. San Mateo will host No. 44 Sequoias this weekend.
