Mounties on the move
The season is now entering the fourth week for most programs and some teams are starting to make a move to the top of the rankings. One such program is Mt. San Antonio College, who has moved up to No. 3 in the rankings.
Mt. San Antonio has been impressive so far, hammering three straight opponents by an aggregate score of 130-52. The Mounties were the only program in the history of the Dirty 30 to win outright back-to-back championships, claiming the title in both 2009-2010. East Mississippi won back-to-back titles in 2013-14, but shared the title with Butte in 2013. Mt. San Antonio has another interesting test this week when they travel to No. 26 Citrus, a program surging forward after dominating the American Division (lower tier) ranks a year ago. Now in the National Division (upper tier), Citrus is 3-0 and their first test in league play is Mt. SAC this Saturday.
Defending national champion San Mateo moved up to No. 7 this week after a solid win against a good Modesto program, 37-20. The Bulldogs have gritted out three straight wins, and seem to be moving in the right direction. They get another stiff test this week when they travel to No. 18 American River College, a program they hammered in the Northern California Finals last year.
The Mississippi ranks have taken some strange twists in the first couple of weeks, with East Mississippi being knocked off in week one and now bouncing back to beat Jones in week two. Copiah-Lincoln is currently the highest ranked team at No. 6 on the strength of the win over EMCC in week one, but they are followed closely by No. 8 Gulf Coast. Copiah-Lincoln now gets an angry Jones this Thursday while Gulf Coast travels to Southwest.
