The 2023 junior college football campaign has reached the second half of the regular season and last week the majority of teams had a bye week to strategize and heal from bumps and bruises. Hutchinson was one of the programs that still played, and took control of the Jayhawk Conference.
Hutchinson took over the top spot in the rankings four weeks ago and shows no signs of letting go. The Blue Dragons now control their own destiny in the Jayhawk Conference after blasting Dodge City, 46-10. Hutch now gets a week off before the final four games of the regular season, with a final game against Iowa Western on November 11.
The California ranks had the week off for a mandatory bye, and now get into the nuts and bolts of the schedule. No. 2 San Francisco has a number of folks chasing them up north while No. 4 Mt. San Antonio, No. 6 Riverside City and No. 7 Fullerton seem to be the odds-on favorites to play for the big prize in the playoffs down south.
The Mississippi ranks are up in the air, with No. 5 Gulf Coast and No. 19 Northeast the lone undefeated programs through the midway point. Gulf Coast blasted Pearl River last week (52-21), but now get a big test when they host No. 10 Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday. Northeast travels to East Central on Thursday.
Trinity Valley is the top-ranked program from the Southwest Junior College Football Conference and the Cardinals come in at No. 14 after taking care of business against Blinn, 37-24. The next three weeks will be tough for TVVC as they play No. 24 Navarro, No. 17 New Mexico Military and No. 25 Kilgore. Five programs have one loss in conference play, making for an interesting finish over the next four weeks.
