In a decision that seems to break ranks from the NJCAA, the schools in Mississippi are still not giving up on a fall schedule for football. The MACC put out a statement on Friday, saying they will still attempt to play in the fall.
“The presidents of the Mississippi Association of Community College (MACC) met today, July 24, 2020, and voted to delay the start of the 2020 fall football season to October 1,” conference representatives said. “The 2020 season will consist of a six-game regular season with divisional play only and will conclude with a playoff. The MACC will continue to evaluate COVID-19 and its impact on our student-athletes.”
This decision would seem to be in stark contrast from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) governing body, who said last week that football will not be played until the spring.
One such reason for such a decision could be that the schools in Mississippi tend to have a lot of December grads, which could leave them with very small rosters in the spring should they wait to play in March. It will be interesting to see if they fall in line with the rest of the NJCAA should COVID-19 ultimately postpone the fall schedule.
We will continue to cover this situation as it unfolds. For now, opening day in Mississippi is scheduled for October 1.
